A lot of companies perform background checks before hiring someone. This is something done to be safe and to protect the company and the customers. Small businesses tend to neglect background checks but there are really no reasons for them not to perform background checks.
Getting a background check done is not very expensive, especially if you run a business with less than 25 employees. Paying for background checks is worth it since a criminal could steal some important business secrets, steal the information of your customers or behave in a manner that would cause you to lose some customers and develop a negative reputation.
Having a criminal record doesn’t mean that someone is dangerous for your business or your customers. For instance, a juvenile record for an act of vandalism or for underage drinking shouldn’t cause you to worry about hiring this person since they have likely changed. You shouldn’t decide against hiring someone who is qualified and motivated because they have an old record for something that is not really significant and that is not related to what your business does.
However, some types of crimes could be an indication that you are not dealing with someone who has good intentions. For instance, a person who has committed any kind of financial crimes, it wouldn’t be safe to let them have access to the personal information of your customers. Someone who committed a murder, sexually assaulted someone, threatened someone or is guilty of abducting a child would not make a good employee.
Every potential employee is unique and you need to go over their record to decide if you want to hire them or not. You should also look at civil suits as well. Civil suits do not always result in a trial and conviction but you might find that a candidate went through a civil suit for sexual harassment.
